How to diagnose fault?

HP 9000 D320 with 11i 32-bit:

My user reports:
"The DAT Drive [A3183A DDS-3] is failing with error # 5
I have tried 2 x tapes
[DDS-3 & DDS-2]
& it still fails"

1] Am I right in thinking it's an I/O error?

2] What extra info do I need from the user to diagnose this error?

Re: How to diagnose fault?

Hi Mike,
sounds like an i/o error to me...
Maybe the user will not tell you how he got into this situation. Anyway, it would be a good idea to check if a process is keeping the device busy because of some unfinished operation.

Re: How to diagnose fault?

What you need to check it

errno 5 is I/O error.

Try changing tapes
|
|still errno 5
Try cleaning the drive
|
|still errno 5
|
|
MIght be a bad tape drive.
check /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for any hardware messages

The following errors are reported in usr/adm/syslog/syslog.log:

EMS Event Notification ------ Value: "CRITICAL (5)" for
Resource: "/storage/events/tapes/SCSI_tape/8_16_5.0.0"
(Threshold: >= " 3")
Execute the following command to obtain event details:

Re: How to diagnose fault?

I'd first run dmesg look for lbolts. If you find one check cables, connections terminators and then boot the system.

If you still have a problem, replace the tape drive.

ioscan -fnC tape

Should show the drive as claimed with its device driver.

Re: How to diagnose fault?

It sounds like the tape drive does need to be replaced. From the error message, it indicated that the could be a medium (or tape) error. So I would try using another DAT tape and see if it still produces the error. If it does then the drive will need replacement. If you can, give a call to HP so that they can decode the error accurately for you.
