Re: How To do Mirroring in HP-UX 11i

Hi Sanjay

The following book from HP should help with alot of HP Sysadmin tasks.
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/B2355-90742.pdf
(Chp6 - Managing Disks gives a good explantion of LVM & mirroring).

In terms of mirroring, you need to be aware that MirrorDisk/UX product needs to be purchased separately and is not part of the standard OS Install. If you haven't purchased this product then you can't mirror anything.
To check its installed type:
# swlist | grep -i mirror
(You should see MirrorDisk/UX)

Mirroring is done using the LVM commands.
For example to mirror a Logical Volume (Filesystem) type:
# lvextend -m 1
(You must ensure there is enough space in the Volume Group for the mirror)

You really need to have an understanding of LVM in order to understand how to mirror etc.
If you're not familiar with LVM then read chp 6 of the above book.

Re: How To do Mirroring in HP-UX 11i

as mentioned LVM knowledge is important first.

man lvm for info on the basics.
man vgcreate for info on volume group creation
man lvcreate for info on lvol creation
(man newfs for info on filesystem creation.)
man lvextend for info on mirror creation
man lvdisplay for info on mirror status

If the lvextend does not have a -m option available you do not have mirror disk installed.

You also will need to be able to identify your hardware fromn the OS view:
use
ioscan -fnk
and look for the disk device files.
In hpux there is no such thing as hw disk partitioning. You have one dev per disk. The lvol is the software partitioning of the volumegroup - the vol group is a collection of one or more physical disk devices )

use
dd if=/dev/dsk/cXtYd0 of=/dev/null
to figyre out where a disk is.
The LED on the disk will blink... you'll then know which /dev/dsk/ corresponds to which physical disk.

Bill
It works for me (tm)
