how to get in ISL prompt in vpar

On a regular sysytem, on the way to boot it up, there will be a message to tell me to hit any key to get in ISL prompt. However, on vpar, I don't see such message. If I use command "shutdown -ry 0", it will get in MON> prompt, and next message would be load vpar, there is no chance I get in ISL.

Please let me know how to get in ISL?

If you get to a MON> prompt (which means you have NO vpars running), you then TOC (power off & then back on) your server.

Re: how to get in ISL prompt in vpar

Hi Harry,

ISL is hardware based and at the same time VPAR is a virtual one. You will need a hardware reboot to go to ISL.

You can go this way to get the ISL.

shutdown all the vpars.

Logon to lan console and go to MP. From there you can reset the server. This time you can get your ISL.

from MP type CM

then use any of (RS,RR or TC) to restart the hard partition.

Re: how to get in ISL prompt in vpar

You will NOT get to an ISL prompt unless you boot the entire hard partition (nPar) as ISL is at te hardware level, whereas vPars are done at software level, as you boot the nPar to /stand/vpmon and not /stand/vmunix, and only then use vpmon commands to boot the vpars, i.e. from vpmon which is software.

It's as Melvyn says - there is no ISL with a vpar - only hard partions.

For more details, see "Installing and Managing HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars)":

Re: how to get in ISL prompt in vpar

Hanry - no isl in vpars, as already set, but You can use vparmodify from a different virtual partition or some other commands at the vpar MONintor, to set anything You would have set in isl.

i.e. vparmodify -p vparname and then pick anything You need from the man page.

It's not possible to get ISL prompt in vpar environment, ISL is possible when you are running non vpar mode
