how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

Hi All!

I have got on my site 12 HP9000 systems, 2 running 11.23 that has internal tape drives, and 8 running 11.31 and 2 running 11.23 with no internal tape drives.
4 of the systems running 11.31 are blades and are on a different subnet.

How to take ignite and recover in a event of failure of those systems with no internal tape drive?

Hi:

configure ignite server and use "make_net_recovery"

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

Hi

So after configuring one of the servers (preferrably) the ones with internal tape drive as an ignite server, I just run that comand from the comand line on the ignite server right?

No

from Ignite-Client

# make_net_recovery -s -v -A -n 1 -P s \

for more info refer to man pages of make_net_recovery
Problems are common to all, but attitude makes the difference

Hi:

# ssh -T $HOST "/opt/ignite/bin/make_net_recovery -u -s ${IGNITE_SERVER} -x inc_entire=vg00 ..."

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

Hi

Correct me if I´m wrong: In the documentation, say that client should boot from the LAN (normal boot). I dont want want this to happen, only in case if a client server root disk (vg00) dies.
I think I´m getting a little bit confused, because in one hand you guys are giving me comands to run on prompt to create ignite tapes, but on the other hand on the manual says that the client boots from the server!!!

Hi

I gather that network booting is an option right?
what about those blades that are on a different subnet?

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

The gnite/UX package supports backup and restore using tape and also over the network. For tape, on;y the client is involved -- no ignite server is needed. For network support, once the ignite server has been configured, you can backup each client to the server. There are two ways:

1. command line on the client (make_net_recovery).

2. Using the GUI on the server to 'pull' the backup to the server.

You run ignite backups on each of your servers, keeping at least two but possibly 4 images in the archives. NOTE: You'll need a *LOT* of space on the ignite server to hold 12 systems with at least 2-4 backups each. Consider creating a separate lvol of about 600-900 GB which you then mount at: /var/opt/ignite (after moving the existing files to the new lvol).

To recover a system from the server, use the lan boot method appropriate for your client (PARISC or Itanium/Integrity). Be sure you check on each server's backup image that it is complete without failures. The backup logs are located in:

/var/opt/ignite/clients//recovery//recovery.log

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

Hi!

Much clear picture now after Bill´s comments, but I still have some queries:
all my servers are rx (itanium)
1. the servers with ignite installed and with tape drive have hp-ux version 11.23, all the remainig servers with no ignite installed and no internal tape drive installed are running under 11.31
The question now is can I still use one of the 11.23 server with internal tape drive to be the ignite server, or do I have to go for new 11.31 servers with probably an ignite version superior than the one on the 11.23 machines?

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

Ignite comes in 4 flavors:

11.11
11.23
11.31

and all 3 in a single depot.

Always load combination (all 3) package. Loading selected versions (depending on the revision) creates problems. The extra files are insignificant in size for all 3.

Re: how to ignite/recover systems with no internal tape drive

In other words: a 11.23 server can be the ignite server for a 11.31 client.

An Integrity server can even boot from LAN across different subnets if you use the "dbprofile" option from EFI.

For other systems you need either to boot from CD, then restore from server or you need a boot helper (another "ignite like" server in the same subnet providing the boot kernel during restore.

Hope this helps!

I have already have ignite installed on a 11.23 server, do I have uninstall that version and install the latest release provided by Bill Hassel link?

It's always better to use the current version.

Hope this helps!
