how to increase the size?

how to increase the size?

we have the internal file system directory/(or)mount point , called /opt - where our all applcations are installed.
now we want to install another applcation, which needs 1GB.
currently /opt has only 80MB of avilable space .
How to increase it to 2GB ?

can You give the suggestion for HP-UX and Solaris?
we have to do it on both.

Thanks in advance .
keeping you ahead of the learning curve

Re: how to increase the size?

Hi Vasu:

For HP-UX:

1) Find out if you have free space in the VG ( vgdisplay -v)
2) If not add the disk and extend the VG (vgextend)
3) Bring in single-user mode and umount the file system ( if don't have online JFS)
4) Extend the LV with new size (lvextend)
5) Extend the file system (extendfs)
6) mount the file system.

Re: how to increase the size?

Hi Vasu

HP-UX
do you have extra space on that volume group?
#cat /etc/fstab |grep opt
It will return something like
/dev/vg00/lvol1 /opt hfs defaults 0 2

#vgdisplay vg00

If free PE = 0 then you can't increate this file system until you add another disk or reduce space from another file system and add on /opt.

But you can still install the software by twisting arms.

say your software is going to /opt/xya and you have enough space in /data directory then create a link

#ln -s /data/xya /opt/xyz
Now install will goes to /data/xyz directory.

Re: how to increase the size?

If your using simple slices on solaris, your basically screwed, or you could concat the slice with using SDS, if you have an available slice on another disk to grow the volume. Or perhaps your using Veritas VM, which would allow you to grow the FS on /opt as well.

Re: how to increase the size?

Hi,

if you know in which sub-directories you'll need that space - why not simply using symbolic links from "/opt/" to another filesystem where you do have the space?
Increasing "/opt" is not neccesarily the best solution at all...

Just my $0.02,

PS: works for HPUX and Solaris, regardless of the filesystem type, LVM or slices ;-)

Re: how to increase the size?

The only thing that is consistent between HPUX and Solaris would be to create a separate filesystem and mount it as /opt/. Since you need 1GB and probably more in the future if you will be doing the application upgrade, etc, it makes sense to have it mounted on a separate filesystem.

Re: how to increase the size?

Hello,
Woodish is right.I go his way.
create links from opt to other file systems for installation.
I have oracle, clearcase, etc installed on other file systems linked to opt with the required dir name.

Thanks

Re: how to increase the size?

Hi Vasu,
just a thought,
Does your apllication installation procedure gives you an option on which dir. to install?you see some apllications do,but maybe this one has to be installed on /opt which I find a bit strange or maybe I am the only to feel that way.
