How to install vPar from Core-CD

Howdy,
this might be easy, but I have not found any info how to install vPar from CD ( I mean that vPar is already created, but the real OS installation to that spesific vPar ).

When I have mounted the CORE-CD-1 and try to vparboot vPar from that CD the led of the CD flashes couple of times but it says that

Failed to open (;)/stand/vmunix
Failed to load (;)/stand/vmunix

In all documents it is assumed that all people are using Ignite to installations but there should be also "direct method" for the installation ..

PS: I have the first vPar up and running, so the vPar related software etc is functioning OK

I found that the fastest way is to shutdown your system entirely, boot from the CD and install using the second vpar's devices: disk, LAN, ...

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Thanx Harry for quick response, BUT should there be any other ways of doing that ... I don't understand why the vPar can *not* be booted/installed directly from CD ?!?! How it is different than booting from CD and installing it "normal way" ..

If it is *not* possible then the idea behind vPars is at least partially not working ..

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Juha,

You won't be able to boot off of your Core-CD1. What you need to do is set up an Ignite-Server and add vPar software as an installable product on your Ignite Server.

Once you have an Ignite server, boot of your Ignite Server and install the OS. Do not forget to select the vPar product as well in your Ignite.

vparboot -p VPARNAME -I 123.456.78.9,/opt/ignite/boot/WINSTALL

where 123.456.78.9 is the IP address of your Ignite Server. You will need at leat a 4.x.x release of Ignite-UX.

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Does the first partition OWN the CD drive?

Can you post your vparboot command?

When I partitioned my N-class, years ago, I created the first partition, did a make recovery tape, and installed the other 5 partitions (a total of six partitions) from the make_recovery tape, all within one day!

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Thanx,
few comments:

Nelson: Can You tell why I can't boot from the Install-CD ?! Should the situation be different compared to that situation where I boot from CD in "normal server" ?! It's "pain in the back side" if You *must* set up / use Ignite every case even one has the media ready ( and the CD / DVD drive available to vPar ) ?! I have some customers where it is marginally impossible to set up "extra functionality" ( foe example no network connection allowed, strict policy what to install servers etc )....

Harry: That was my "plan B" to do if it is hard/impossible to install from CD .. But You didn't say it is impossible , so can You point me to right directions if install from CD is possible ( even if it harder/more work etc .. )

The vPar boot command was something ( I'm currently in home and no connection to work environment ) like "vparboot -p vparX -B alt " and the alternate boot directs to the DVD-drive hardware path ... I thought that only thing I am missing is the way that the "bootable file" is defined gecause if it is missing then the default is /stand/vmunix ( like the way that it is done in Ignite where the file is WINSTALL relocatable .. )

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Juha,

Booting a vPar off a bootable CD will simply not work because you need the vPar subsystem as part of the bootup... WINSTALL in an Ignite-UX lan boot is what is called "vPar aware".

Of course, you can create your own vPar aware bootable boot CD/DVD or boot tape. I thik a recipe does exists...

Re: How to install vPar from Core-CD

Nelson,
can You explain more why the "vPar subsystem is not there " when I try to boot from CD ?! The vpmon is running and what more should the vPar need ?! Is the vPar seeing the CD device differentily ?! As I undestand the situation the vpmon etc shows only configured resources ( io-cards, devices , cpu and memory ) to vPars and the operating systems shouldn't actually even know that it is running in the vPar etc ..

IMHO: There is something totally wrong if the vPar setup needs "extra" work when setting it up needs something more/different when one tries so simple things like booting from CD, I agree that work related to vPar software etc is needed but that should be adequate ...
