How to restrict HP-UX 11.0 run on 32 bit

Dear all,

I just have a question regarding HP c3700 workstation can restrict HP-UX 11.0 run on 32 bits mode. By default, it will use 64 bit, but if we want to restirct the system run 32 bit as default. How can we do it? Reinstall? or just modify the system setting. Your advice are welcome. Thank you very much.

AFAIK the only way is to reinstall, because there are many many fileset that depends on the bit number.

I don't know c3700 workstation, as my know that HP-UX 11.0 can be either 32 or 64 bit depending on the machine it is installed on.

If you have 11.0 installed on a machine do a:

# getconf KERNEL_BITS

But I don't think that we can switch HP-UX between 32-bit and 64-bit.

there is nothing stoppping you running 32bit applications on hte 64bit OS, but if you REALLY want to run hte OS at 32bit, then I am afraid it is a re-install.
Make a recovery tape using Ignite/UX before re-installing, so you can return the system to 64bit if needed afterwards without having to do a lot of work,.

32 bit applications can run smoothly on 64bit machines. Reinstalling a 32 bit OS is the solution if you have 64bit installed.

Thanks for your reply.

I have boot HP-UX 11.0 OS cdrom on C3700 machine, and there are some options for me to select. I just found there is option "Environment" and the content are "64-bit CDE HP-UX environment" and "64-bit Minimal HP-UX English Only". That's means, there is no any option for me to choice 32-bit. Do i use wrong boot media or something i missed? Can Someone direct me the correct procedure? Thanks!

Take a look at this doc(System Requirements section), c3700 workstation supports only 64-bit:

Didn't you also ask this in comp.sys.hp.hpux? Anyhow, on any system with a PA-8500 or later CPU, when running HP-UX 11 or later, only supports a 64-bit kernel.

The only systems on which one can run a 32-bit 11.X kernel are those based on PA-8200 or earlier CPUs.

The C3700 has I believe a PA-8700 CPU.

As pointed-out, 32-bit HP-UX user space applications run just fine and dandy on a 64-bit HP-UX kernel.
