How to schedule restart while installing patch..

Hi All,
I have to install latest patch bundle in my HPUX 11.31 Srvr. Its demanding for a immediate restart after installing the patch. I need to avoid that restart and will restart the srvr latter.... Is it possible? If so how?

Re: How to schedule restart while installing patch..

How are you doing the install? Are you running interactively using the swinstall GUI? If so, there will be a pop-up window that you have to click "OK" on before the system reboots. You can simply wait to click on the "OK" until you're ready, however, there is some (probably minimal) risk involved because libraries and such have been updated and your running kernel is now out of sync.

Re: How to schedule restart while installing patch..

why you want to patch the server if you are not using the result of the patching/

other wise if you need to make use of a patch which does not require a reboot then just push that alone. Later the patches which need reboot can be done when ever you are comfortable with a down time.

Re: How to schedule restart while installing patch..

Hi

I got this command from patch mangement book .So i think you can use autoreboot=false option in below command to avoid reboot.refer man pages for swinstall

swinstall -s -x autoreboot=true
-x patch_match_target=true

Thanks

To clarify, setting "-x autoreboot=false" simply "prevents the installation of software requiring a reboot". See the man page for swinstall.

Re: How to schedule restart while installing patch..

Just to be clear - how long do you want to defer the reboot for. hours / days / weeks ?
Like others have stated, I would defer the patching untill I could schedule a reboot. And I'm "Old School", I like to be watching when the server reboots after patching, not having it done un-attended in the middle of the night.

Well actually I'm "OldSchool"...
but I agree...schedule downtime and don't do unattended patches.

kind of reminds me of the old tv game show "to tell the truth"....
