HOW TO TAR FROM AN ULTRIUM LTO1 TAPE

I am attempting to files off an 100GB LTO1 tape drive but I keep getting "cant read" errors. The tape is a catalog bkup medium for Netbackup and I want select files off the tape.
Any suggestions?

Hi,

You can try to use dd:
#>dd if=/dev/rmt/xxxx bs=NNNk

You have to play with blocl size in order to get normal output.
If you have more than one "tape file" on the tape, use "no-rewind" (rmt1n) device.

Re: HOW TO TAR FROM AN ULTRIUM LTO1 TAPE

Fred,

You'll have to use Netbackups' restore to get what you're wanting. The other posts are to help you get "Netbackup" files off of the tape, but I can tell from your questioning, that you want your files that were in the HPUX file system. Unless you're a guru in the data layout of Netbackup, or you're lucky enough to find out that the files are mostly text and laid end to end with little to no indexing and formatting and tablature (and they probably are not) then your only method of getting files out of a Netbackup is to run Netbackup restore procedure.

When I say "only" I mean the only straightforward way. Beyond that, you'll probably be writing some C code to retrieve data from the files on the tape in whatever format you figure out Netbackup stores data in.

Hi Fred,

I would also suggest you take a short look at the ITRC ettiquette recommendations and assign points to responses based on the helpfulness.

Especially to my boss, Victor Fridyev.

Just kidding, none for me.

Glad you got a solution.
