how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Hi all,

I need to reinstall one of the vPars on 9000/800/SD32000. I have two vPars there:

- on the 1st one there is an Ignite server with some HP-UX installation images, but with no core-os within them (no sufficient space within the corresponding filesystem)
- the 2nd one is the one I need to freshly re-install

I have four HP-UX 11.11 CDs:

Install-CD HP-UX 11i Enterprise OE
1 of 4 - B7993-10044
2 of 4 - B7993-10045
3 of 4 - B7993-10046
4 of 4 - B7993-10047

The CD1 (B7993-10044) is now inserted into the DVD-ROM belonging to the 2nd vPar on the HW_PATH 6/0/2/0/1.3.0

I have tried to vparboot this 2nd vPar:

vparboot -p 2ndVPar -B 6/0/2/0/1.3.0

but it has failed because there is no /stand/vmunix on the required path:

[MON] 2ndVPar has halted.

[2ndVPar]
Failed to open (6/0/2/0/1.3.0.0.0.0.0;)/stand/vmunix
Failed to load (6/0/2/0/1.3.0.0.0.0.0;)/stand/vmunix

[1stVPar]
[MON] 2ndVPar has halted.

So I have started the 2ndVPar with the old configuration and mount the CD - surprisingly enough there is no stand on it!
I have searched for stand or vmunix through entire CD - nothing.

Could you please advice?

No tou won't find a vmunix on the DVD as it is an installation kernel and it has a different name (from memory I think its WINSTALL).

But regardless of that you can't do what you are attempting - you can't install subsequent vPars from CD/DVD - vparboot will only boot from an existing disk (for an already installed vPar), from an Ignite server (for a fresh install), or if you have v3.3 or higher from an Ignite Image on tape.

To install subsequent vPars you basically have 2 choices:

1. Set up an Ignite server and install from that.

2. Boot the entire nPar off your DVD amd install to the disks for your 2nd vPar. Now boot backup up your first vPar and run all your vparcreate stuff for the second vPar - as it is all installed you can now boot the second vPar straight from its own boot disk with vparboot.

You really need to have a good read of these:

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Hi,

you cannot install the vPar from the CD while other vPars are running.

1) install the vPar from a golden image

2) stop all vPars, reboot from the cd and install the second vPar from CD - install vPar software - reboot to vPars mode

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Hi all,

I cannot stop all the vPars - the 1stVPar is within the production environment and it is out of the question to stop it. The 1stVPar must simply run.

I need to re-install the 2ndVPar to have the fresh 11.11 installation on it.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

OK,

thanks to Duncan's links I know now that it is not possible to boot vPar from DVD or CD.

So let me modify my question now:

Within the 1stVPar I have the Ignite server from which I CAN boot the 2ndVPar. I have the CD inserted in the DVD which is belonging to the 2ndVPar.

Could I boot from the Ignite server (on the 1stVPar) and use the installation CD inserted to DVD-ROM belonging to the 2ndVPar, which will be reinstalled?

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

The important point is:
The vPar software MUST be included in the install to make the kernel movable - otherwise the vPar is not able to boot.

You may create a boot depot including all software and install from there.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Hi all,

I have not been able to see the CD locally when trying to re-install the 2ndVPar with Ignite server.

So my next idea is to mount the installation CD on the 1stVPar, NFS-export it for the 2ndVPar and then use this media when doing the re-installation by the Ignite server (which is configured on 1stVPar)

Torsten: I have HP-UX 11i Enterprise OE CDs (1,2,3,4) - I only hope that they contain the vPar software.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

No, they don't.

You need to create an install depot containing *ALL* software needed.
It must be the same vPar version as used in the other vPar!
Once this is created, you can perform a swdepot based install.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

OK, Thorsten.

I am including the CD1 into the depot, but there are 4 of CDs total. The common HP-UX installation calls for 2 CDs.

So will the CD1 with core-os be enough or should I add also the 2nd CD? :-)

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

add the second *AND* the vPars depot.

Hope this helps!

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Hi Torsten (and all),

I have done so:

- I have created 4GB filesystem dedicated to the depot :-)
- I have added the 11.11 CD1 and CD2 to the depot
- I have added the VPar software to the depot of the same version as on the 1stVPar

- I have done make_depots on the new depot
- I have managed Ignite-UX index file

- I have exported the depot directory to the 2ndVPar

- I have booted the 2ndVPar from the Ignite server on the 1st VPar

- I have seen my depot within Environments:
Enterprise OE-64bit -> I have picked up everything neccessary including the VPar software (VPARMGR + T1335AC)
- The installation went fine - the new disks have been created etc. etc.

HOWEVER - the analysis phase warned me about the following:

The corequisite PartitionManager.PARMGR,r>=B.11.11.01.05" for
fileset VirtualPartition.VPAR-KRN,r=A.03.02.04" cannot be successfully resolved.

ERROR: "uxora051:/": The software dependencies for 6 products or filesets cannot be resolved.

The installation process installed everything then EXCEPT the VPARMGR software

a pain :-)

I will now include the PARMGR software into the depot and will run all the process again.

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Did you really copy all depots to one?

Hope this helps!

Re: how to vparboot from 11.11 CD (B7993-10044)

Yes, Torsten, I have copied all depots to one - i.e. CD1, CD2, T1335AC(HP-UX Virtual Partitions) and VPARMGR

The problem was that some additional bundles are needed:

* SysMgmtServer
* Jdk14
* Jre14
* hpuxwsTOMCAT
* NPartition

which have other corequisites of course :-(....

* PartitionManager
* SysMgmtAgent

But some of these software bundles/packages have been already included in CD1/CD2 - so finally one need only these three bundles to add:

* SysMgmtAgent
* SysMgmtServer
* hpuxwsTOMCAT

Having all this in one depot I have proceeded classically:

# make_config -s /var/opt/ignite/dukul/depots/Rel_B.11.11 -c /var/opt/ignite/dukul/data/ux_core_vp_par_coreq.cfg

# manage_index -a -f /var/opt/ignite/dukul/data/ux_core_vp_par_coreq.cfg -r B.11.11

checked the new Ignite server configuration:
#instl_adm -T
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.22/config
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.22/hw_patches_cfg
* Checking file: /var/opt/ignite/config.local
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.00/config
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.00/hw_patches_cfg
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.23/config
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.23/hw_patches_cfg
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.11/config
* Checking file: /opt/ignite/data/Rel_B.11.11/hw_patches_cfg
* Checking file: /var/opt/ignite/dukul/data/uxvp_cfg
* Checking file: /var/opt/ignite/dukul/data/ux_core_vp_par.cfg
* Checking file: /var/opt/ignite/dukul/data/ux_core_vp_par_coreq.cfg

then I have booted the vPar using the minikernel WINSTALL:
#vparboot -p 2ndVPar -I 1stVPar,/opt/ignite/boot/Rel_B.11.11/WINSTALL

and voila - I have done the setup, installed all and nicely booted the re-installed 2ndVPar.

(After the boot the OpenSSH was missing but this was only a small dirt along the way.)

Thank you VERY much, Torsten.
