HP 11i Userid Limitation

It appears that there is an eight character limitation on userids? Is there any way to increase that or remove the limitation?

Nope, not at this point. That is being worked on for future HP-UX releases, but at this time you should stick with 8 characters.

That has been the limit since the begining of time.

You can assign longer alternate name to the 8 character name for the following systems-

email - /etc/mail/aliases
samba - /etc/opt/samba/username.map
pam - /etc/opt/cifsclient/pam/domain_user.map

To explain - we are being asked to use a similar userid across all of our systems. The scheme being used is first initial and full last name. This will work on our NT systems, but not HP.

You'll need to explain to whomever is asking that their scheme is not possible with HP-UX.

Our scheme is first 6 letters of last name + first initial + number to make id unique if required.

The current plans are to implement long usernames in the next release of HP-UX - 11i v3. At that time we will support user names and group names longer than 8 characters.
