hp 700/94 console

Is there a manual for the 700/94 console, attached to a rp7400 hp ux server. Also I was asked to run the file manager from the system console and I'm not sure what the command is to do this?

Re: hp 700/94 console

First of all, 700/96 is a ascii based terminal and filemanager or any alike utility, usually refers to a graphics terminal. So, I would ask the person who told you to run file manager on a terminal, what he/she is after and if this person knows that you are talking about a unix system and a serial, ascii character based consoles. If they insist, you can ask what file manager they want you to run and how it gets run.

Otherwise, you should not need a manual for a 700/96. You just plug it in the serial port, put it in the remote mode (I think by pressing F4, by pressing this F-key, the mode toggles between local and remote modes and displays the current mode on the screen) and it just works.

Re: hp 700/94 console

Donald, the console you ar referring to is an ASCII terminal. If you are having trouble accessing it, you can reset it by holding down the D key while you power it up.

File manager, I believe is a graphical applicatiom, and as such, cannot run on this console. You can run it from an X-terminal (or X app such as Hummingbird or reflections) if you wish

Docs on the terminal are available at www.docs.hp.com - just do a search for it.

i went to www.docs.hp.com and couldn't find any manuals on the 700/94 console. I also did a search on 700/94.

Re: hp 700/94 console

The manuals for the 700 series were written a long time before pdf existed, so you won't find any online manuals (at least from HP). However, you don't need any terminal manual to login to the console. It is no different than logging in from a PC over the network. (this assumes that the terminal is actually plugged in and working)

Now since the only "file manager" program for HP-UX is a graphics program, the console simply can't be used--the 700/94 (the entire 700 series) is an ASCII or character terminal. No mouse, no fancy colors, nothing but text, just like the good old days.

So you have to find out what is meant by "file manager". Did the requestor think that the rp7400 is a PC? If so, perhaps the "Unix for Dummies" book would be useful. What does the requestor want?--a list of files in a directory? Try the ls -l command.

Re: hp 700/94 console

When using the exceed file manager I was getting verbage like 'value too large to be stored in data type' on certain files. If i did an ls -all on the same files everything was ok. So the hummingbird tech said :
'I'm curious as to what the graphical user interface on the console looks like. Have you verified that on the UNIX console GUI, using the file manager icon results in something different? So i assumed they were talking about the 700/94 UNIX console. I thought maybe there was some function key that invoked a 'file manager' to display files. I've only been doing unix for about 1 1/2 years, so you can see my confusion about a UNIX console GUI??

Re: hp 700/94 console

Donald,

There are graphic capable consoles that can be connected to some systems but I am afraid rp7400 is not one of them.

When you said file size too large, it made me wonder: Are you trying to upload, using hummingbird-exceed file manager that is, a file which is larger than 2GB in size. If that is the case, you may be hitting the largefiles option limit on the filesystem that you are trying to upload to. If this file is much smaller in size, diregard this comment of mine but it is, go to a terminal window and issue the command:

fsadm /mount/point/of/your/filesystem

if you see largefiles you are good, if you see nolargefiles and your upload is more than 2GB you need to set this parameter.

Also check to see if you are running out of space on this particular filesystem and the complaint is purely for that.

hope this helps

Re: hp 700/94 console

OK, I see the problem. Unix has been a character mode interface for more than 30 years and only since the creation of X/windows has there been a GUI for HP-UX. Except for small, single user workstations where a graphics card is installed and becomes the default console (and Linux because of it's PC base), a Unix console is a character mode terminal. The question comes from a someone who is CUI-challenged. Most 'real' Unix users never touch a mouse. And your Hummingbird technician is probably an expert on Linux (where there is no 'terminal' but a graphics card and monitor).

You are using a special program (Exceed) to access the built-in X/window programs on your PC. But the console on the vast majority of commercial Unix servers is a terminal--no graphics, GUI, just text on the screen (like DOS if you're familiar with old PCs). So, the 700/94 terminal has no "file manager" capability, just commands like ls -l.

Now a complicating factor in looking at your Exceed display is understanding what is Exceed and what is HP-UX X/windows. If you use the typical Exceed method to connect to an X/window server, a big program called CDE is started on the HP-UX computer, and the results are displayed on your PC. And in the icon tray there are terminals such as dtterm and/or xterm. CDE also provides tools that run on HP-UX to change colors and backgrounds and a file manager.

So if you are starting the file manager from the CDE toolbar, then the error message is from HP-UX because Exceed knows nothing about HP-UX--it is simply interpreting graphics codes sent over the LAN to put up the colors and decorations. And this means that it is not an Exceed problem. Most likely your HP-UX server is not properly patched so the CDE file manager program is probably busted. You'll need the latest Xwindow/Motif/CDE patches.

Re: hp 700/94 console

Bill,

Thanks for the info, it appears these export files are now 5gb. So hopefully getting the patches you suggested for xwindows/motif. will fix the problem. You wouldn't happen to know where those patches are located? I'v asked HP and an awaiting an answer..

Re: hp 700/94 console

All HP-UX patches are in the ITRC: http://itrc.hp.com and specifically: http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/search.do?admit=-682735245+1126534482434+28353475&BC=patch.breadcrumb.main%7C&pageContextName=hpux%3A%3A%3A

You would look for the two cumulative patch sets: xserver and Motif runtime. When you select these for download, there may be a feww additional patches that are also required as dependencies.

However, these sites are for individual patches. If you have not patched your systems regularly, look at the bundles:

http://h20293.www2.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/hwcr.html
http://h20293.www2.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/gr.html

Like any OS patch procedure, you need to test the patch bundles with your application(s) on an offline system, and if OK, use Ignite/UX for a backup before proceeding.
