HP Admin Training

Dear Friends,
I am looking for hands-on hp-admin training in US. I researched HP's training site. They have good number of courses thought expensive. But hands-on training is only what you can do between 9am - 5pm (5-day course). If anyone has gone thru the HP training class, advise me how the hands-on training is. If not, anyone knows about other places to get training, please advise.

Thanks,
Ravi

The best hands-on training (in my opinion) is OTJ - On The Job.

This is tough, try to find an employer who will accept this. Once you do, hopefully the employer will pop the the training costs so you can advance further.

Re: HP Admin Training

there is no such thing as a hands on training. If you have any unix sysadmin background and want to get familiarized with HPUX flavor, you can take this class first (if you want to or if you like formal training)

http://www.hp.com/education/courses/h5875s.html

if you have no familiarity with unix, you can follow this path in this sequence (generally for windows admins transitioning to hpux admin):

http://www.hp.com/education/courses/51434s100.html
http://www.hp.com/education/courses/h3064s100.html
http://www.hp.com/education/courses/h3065s100.html

then regardless of which track you chose above or even if you are the adventurous type who likes learning on his/her own, buy a cheap hp9000 machine from ebay, which preferably comes with a relatively recent HPUX media cdroms and start crashing the system as many times as you can.

Again, there is no such thing as "hands-on training" that can be taught in a classroom. The best way to learn is by doing it yourself and asking for help from the experienced admins, which I am sure you know, this forum is full of.

Good luck.

Re: HP Admin Training

In my opinion, HP is the best place to go for HP specific training. I don't know of any other company that offers HP specific training, actually. They know their stuff better than anyone though.

I've only taken two HP courses (HP-UX Performance and Tuning in 2000 and HP ServiceGuard I in August). My experiences with both were very positive. Yeah, they are expensive, but so is every other classroom training course you can take from Sun, IBM, Oracle, Red Hat, etc. If it's the only way to get hands-on exposure to something (as was the case with me on ServiceGuard), it's not a bad way to go. They definitely have plenty of lab time and the instructors seemed very knowledgable and willing to get answers to questions when they didn't know the answers offhand.

Re: HP Admin Training

Well, I would disagree that there's no such thing as hands on training. While it's true no training class is going to get you exposed to all the sundry problems you can experience in the real world, the labs in the classes do give students a chance to try things and break things and see how the software basically functions. That's why I took the ServiceGuard class... no way to play at work because they had no sandbox systems and no way to do ServiceGuard at home. I'm certainly no expert, but I was much more comfortable after the class than I was before it dealing with ServiceGuard issues. It actually came in quite handy a week or two after class when I got paged one morning for problems with a cluster we supported. I probably wouldn't have been able to troubleshoot it very effectively previously, but was able to get them up and running again in short order as a result of what I learned and was able to do hands on in class.

Re: HP Admin Training

I did HP 5 Days Training on HP-UX in HP Training centre. it is nice and hands on training. They provide a hard copy of training guide. do cerification, its better for knowledge and career.

Re: HP Admin Training

Thank you Rick, Mel, Jeff and Awadhesh. All of your responses are helpful to me. Particulary, I liked the idea of buying from ebay, hopefully they are cheap and affordable. Also, good feedback from you who attended the HP training sessions. I will try to attend. Since I am new to this forum, I am trying to find how I can assign points. I will do it soon. Thank you all again.
