proftpd error:
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection
root:[/root]:=>ftp mfl-hpux
Connected to mfl-hpux.
220 mfl-hpux FTP server (Version 1.1.214.4(PHNE_33412) Mon Sep 19 18:45:21 GMT 2005) ready.
Name (mfl-hpux:root):
331 Password required for root.
Password:
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> bye
221 Goodbye.
root:[/root]:=>ftp mfl-hpux
Connected to mfl-hpux.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Any ideas as to why one works and the other doesn't ??

Solutionhave you checked /etc/pam.d/ftp, and /etc/ftpusers file for authentication?
if not you can also read about how-to debug proftpd.

I can imagine to logon with root account is disabled by default. Did you try another user?

and use sftp. It's secure - why mess around with 3rd part sh!t?
Use sftp & sleep better at night.
