HP Printer and jetdirect

hello all,

My client has set up their network printers (all HP printers) from SAM, LP Spooler, then add Network Printer. It is not printing. I sent a couple of jobs with the -w and got the email that the job left and all was hunkey-dorey but it printed nothing. They are using hpnpadmin to admin the thing. It has been a while since I set up printers, but I remember it being very simple...but I had to use JetDirect. I had to download it and install it on the box and could therefore use "jetadmin". This system is 11.0 and the printer is an HP printer. The printer is pingable as well and added to the hosts file.

Thanks,

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Hi,

What is the output of 'lpstat -t' ? This output will give you the status of scheduler, pending jobs and configuration.

Is the scheduler running ?
Did you try deleting SCHEDLOCK file in /var/spool/lp?

try:

# lpshut
# lpsched

Some thoughts ...

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Yes, tried all that you mentioned.

Jetdirect is not on the system. Doesn't it have to be? They just used SAM and set up a network printer and use hpnpadmin, which has never worked. So do I have to download JetDirect and install it then reinstall the printers?

Thanks you,

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Hi Sally:

Remove the existing network printers.

You now have two choices:

1) Install the old and generally preferred 'D' version of JetDirect and then install using jetadmin

2) Install the new 'E' version and either install using the new install utility or from SAM if you load the SAM patches.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Thank you Clay. Can you tell me where I can find the new E version? and just to confirm, they definitely need some form (D version or E version) of JetDirect on their system?

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Hi Sally,

Many people prefer the older version of JetAdmin. That works well. I, on the other hand, am quite happy with hppi. It works fine for me on my 11.0 servers. Here's what I have:
swlist -l product | grep -i jet
HPNPL E.10.05 Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix
swlist -l bundle | grep -i jet
5181-3517 E.10.05 Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix
swlist -l fileset | grep -i jet
# HPNPL E.10.05 Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix
HPNPL.HPNPL-MAN E.10.05 Standard Man Pages for JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix

Just another opinion.

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

you can telnet to the jetdirect card on the printer to verify connectivity, and then do / and listq: to see the current setup. The listq: should return queues for TEXT, RAW, AUTO, and maybe a postscript queue if you have the postscript prom on the printer. RAW will most likely be the default.

You can then setup a printer on the HP box; make sure that the language default matches one of the options from the listq: above, or the jetdirect card will discard the job.

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Thank you Darrell. Does verion E (found it by the way) no longer use jetadmin?

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

That's correct though it still looks very much like the JetAdmin I used back on 10.01.

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

Darrell, what do you use to admin the printers then? do you use hpnpadmin?

Re: HP Printer and jetdirect

hppi (/usr/bin/hppi). Or you can use SAM which will call hppi for you.
