HP's apache and mod_rewite map lookup failures

Due to issues of support, we're trying to switch from our own apache to the one supplied by HP. We rely on mod_rewrite RewriteMaps and they seem to silently fail in HP's apache. Here's an entry from the rewrite.log:

127.0.0.1 - - [10/Sep/2007:15:49:08 --0400] [www.armstrong.com/sid#4023c438][rid#40584058/initial] (5) map lookup FAILED: map=legacy[dbm] key=/commceilingsna/article37225.htm

I've verified the existence of that key in the map. This function works perfectly on our apache but fails with this error on HP's apache. Any idea what's happening?
