HP Storageworks DAT 40 drive in K-Class server

Hello All,

Have anybody used a HP Storageworks DAT40 tape drive with HP28655 SE SCSI adapter? I have connected the drive (which is a LVE/SE drive) to HP28655 and terminated the SCSI bus with a SE SCSI Terminator. The operating system (HP-UX 11.0) detects the drive and device files are created.

But when the drive is accessed using mt, tar etc it throws "I/O error". I have tested the drive OK by connecting it on a LVD bus on another system.

Any clue about what the pblm is? Have anybody here faced similar issue?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

LVD HVD mismatch? Is HP28655 SE SCSI adapter a LVD device?, both should be matching when it comes to LVD or HVD. Both should be either LVD or HVD.

Also, when you see io error, what else do you see? What's in syslog.log and dmesg? Did you check the drive with STM?

Re: HP Storageworks DAT 40 drive in K-Class server

Hello RAK,

As I said earlier, HP28655 is a HP-PB SE SCSI adpater (not LVD or HVD) to use with HP PB systems like K, E,G, H, I series HP9000 systems. (of course, it is a very old bus standard; but there are people who still use it.). Since the DAT40 device is LVD/SE normally it should be working with this card.

There is absolutely nothing reported in syslog and dmesg output about this device/SCSI bus. STM says "information is disabled on this device" when tried to run "information" on it.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Sunil:

I have had the same problem with other LVD devices (LVD - DLT8000's) when conected to the HP28655. Like you state the OS can see the drive but we could never read /write to it.

I got around it by adding a FWD SCSI card and connecting the drive through a DWZZB. This is an old Digital Equipment Corp FWD SCSI to SE SCSI converter. Once I did that the device worked fine but I could never get the device to work with the HP28655 card.
