HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

My 735/125 system hangs during startup. It fails on the "Start NIS client subsystem" line and refuses to go past the next line. I *need* to startup the system just enough to run "/etc/set_parms initial" to set the new system parameters after a move to another network.

How do I get enough of the system up to run "/etc/set_parms initial"

Re: HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

Joe,

When you boot the system, interrupt the boot by hitting the ESC key (the system should give you a 10 second time window in which to do this). At the prompt, enter:

bo pri

to boot from the primary boot device. When asked if you want to interact, answer Y. The system will then get you to an ISL prompt. Here, you enter:

hpux -is

to boot into single user mode. In single user mode, you can mount the filesystems in vg00 and then run your set_parms command.

Re: HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

Boot in single user mode.

break the boot sequence
type "boot pri" at the prompt
answer y to interact with ISL
type "hpux -is"

This will get you into single user mode.

then

mount /usr
mount /var
mount /tmp

That should do it. Then run set_parms

Hope this helps.

Re: HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

If you need to break in w/o having to reboot, try hitting control-|, this should get you to a login prompt. Log in from there (it may take some time as it will try to talk to NIS) and then run /etc/set_parms and make your changes.

Re: HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

Hi Joe,

Press the break key when the system is stuck like that.

You should get the login prompt.

Edit /etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf and set the variable AUTOMOUNT to "0" and reboot the box. You should be able to get the login prompt.

Hope this helps.

Re: HP-UX 10.20 hangs during startup.

Hi Joe
You can use ctrl |(pipe) to break in this situation
