Re: HP-UX 10.20 root login

is there an /etc/securetty file with no entries in it ? if so, edit it with vi and put the word "console" on a line all by itself, without the quotation marks and save it. This way you are able to login from console. Remove this file totally if you want to be able to logion as root from anywhere including telnet/ssh, but it is not a good security practice.

Hi,

If you use ssh login, then make "yes" in /etc/opt/sshd_config file as shown below:

# Authentication:
PermitRootLogin no --> make this "yes"

If not ssh, check entries in /etc/securetty file.

I do not have /etc/securetty and I am not using ssh. As I mention before, I can not login at console either, but I can su to root. This only happened after I changed root password.

I will change in a few days and then try it again.

Re: HP-UX 10.20 root login

Did you use special characters in your new password? The command: stty -a will show yopu the terminal meaning of some special characters and the shell has a number of reserved characters. The most common problem characters are:

@ ; < > [ ] { } | ? # * &

Now you can work around these special characters in some cases, but it is far easier to change the password to alphanumeric and perhaps a few safe characters not from the above list.
