HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

I understand the support for HP/UX 10.20 is going away by HP. With time to think about it and knowing I at home and work have older HP equipment. What would be the overriding reason to go to HP/UX 11i or HP/UX 11 or simply leave 10.20 run, since it is running OK with all the patches. What if any are the big differences?

It reminds me of Microsoft dropping support for Windows NT 4.0 even though it kind of works OK with SP-6a. Forcing you to go to 2000 PRO or God forbid XP and sign your life away. I personally would go with 2000 PRO (not all the licensing and big brother crap by Microsoft) then go to XP, although eventually I suppose XP will be the answer at least for awhile.

Anyway, back to HP/UX...

Re: HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

The reason why commercial offices tend to go to 11 or 11i is because of the 64bit availability. Eventually all the softwares will become 64bit ready and older OSes will become unusable.

Re: HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

11 and 11i support the newest HP systems and hardware. The Operating system also has some very nice improvements.
Some of the older systems cannot go to 11.
You would have to check to see if yours are supported. You may have to get a firmware upgrade. HP will drop support of the 10.2 OS and stop taking Software calls for 10.2. They also drop support for older system models.

Re: HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

Well Support is going away is good enough for me but 10.20 has been around a very long time and for that matter 11.0 is quite old. If it were me, I would go ahead and at least install 11.0 but I would give serious thought to 11.11. I have had no problems with it other than a minor pronlem with STM that has since been resolved. I've been running both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of 11.11 for about 9 months without problems. 10.20 applications run on it without problems. The only exception to that has been lsof which is very kernel intensive; in fact, the 32-bit 11.11 version will not even run on 64-bit 11.11. I don't think you will have any problems with ordinary applications. Since you mentioned home, 11x also has PPP support which might come in handy.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

Ken,

It all depends on the applications that you support and the needs of your userbase. For example we are still running in production on 10.20, however we are upgrading to 11.0 within the next six months, as it is a prerequisite for migrating our version of Sybase ASE to the latest version.

If 10.20 is stable for you and there is no need either by requirements of the applications that you support or the need for 64bit, then I'd say there isn't a reason for migrating until 6/30/03. Take a look:

As for your Windows comments, I'd say move to Win2k Pro ASAP as it is so much more stable then NT4 ever was, XP still needs a service pack to come along.

Hope that helps.

Re: HP/UX 10.20 vs 11 vs 11i Question

Hi Ken,

There is no problem in using 10.20 if you are using it for personal use. However you may not get any new software on that or any support for new products. Take a look at the hpux faq,

Hope this helps.
