hp-ux 11.0 32bit and 64bit OS

Hi all,
I have a test box running 11.0 32bit.
Just got a new piece of software the network dept wants put on and it requires 11.x 64bit.

Dumb question, Is there a simple way to convert to 64bit without having to re-install the OS again?

Thanks,
MIke

No, you completely need to re-install the OS. At installation time, after setting the modelstring, you can choose 32bit, 64bit, or both 32 AND 64 bit.

Hi Mike,

You can use /usr/sbin/update-ux to upgrade the OS word width from 32 to 64.

But I have never done that and dont have a clue how successful it will be.

As always, I beleive in clear cold install and take it from there

The upgrade process works and is rather painless if you have a modicum of free space in / and /stand. I would certainly do a make_tape_recovery first.

The first task you need to perform is a getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS to see if your box will support 64-bit 11.x. Since you are at 11.0 and the new software specifies 11.x, this might be a good time to install 11.11 instead. I haven't tried 11.0 32-bit to 11.11 64-bit upgrades but I have done "same-bitness" 11.0 -> 11.11 upgrades.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
Guess I'll either upgrade or check the previous version of this product they want installed and see if that is 32bit
