HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

I'm having problems cold installing HP-UX 11.00. I've interrupted the boot process and re-directed it to boot from the CD-ROM. It gets as far as the lines:

Boot
: disk(10/0/14/0.0.0.0.0.0.0;0):INSTALL
7573604 + 523400 + 524928 start 0x1d54e8

Then it just sits there.

The system is a J5000 and I've updated the firmaware to version 5.0.

Has anybody experienced the same problem or got an idea what it may be. I'm thinking it may be either a CD-ROM compatibility problem (TEAC), or the media itself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

After you receive the message its executing the INSTALL program (or loading vmunix) the system is doing an IOSCAN - so if it hangs you have a physical hardware problem.

Check all cables/controllers etc. for any possible hardware problems.
or
your CD may simply need cleaning or the CD you are using is dirty - try another.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

The system is up and running fine with HP-UX 10.20. This would seem to indicate that the hardware is fully functional, would it not?

Also, the CD can be mounted and read from, so would seem to be o.k. Its clean and not scratched (having not been out of the sleeve before).

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

Which media and which datecode are you installing from?
The documented media to install a J5000 is HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core Enhancements, November 1999.
Otherwise look for the newwest 11.00 Install media.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

It is the original CD that shipped with the system when purchased, dated May 1999 (inc. Ext. pack 9905).

My hope was to install from this, then bring the system up to date from the ITRC.

Are you saying this CD is no good for my system? Would seem a bit silly to ship incompatable media.

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

Yes, it was discovered afterwards that a later revision was required. certain drivers and other things were nit yet available on the earlier releases, hence the "hang" as it cannot recognize some of the hardware

choice is yours, but I would go for 11.11
Just for your info, here is a matrix of OS vs systems to peruse:

Re: HP-UX 11.00 cold install hangs on boot

Excellent, problem solved then. Thanks a lot.

So if I'm going to request new media, is it worth going straight to 11.11? The workstation is used primarily for CAE work so would it make a difference which version I install (assuming it's supported by the application of course).

YES

YES, 32bit/64bit will be the issue.
