I have some HP Boxes (rp 7410 and rp54XX) installed with HP-UX 11.11. I have a question here for you.
I heard HP-UX 11.11 in delivered with Veritas Volume Manager. I also see that "Base Veritas Volume Manager" is installed in my box. What about License requirements? Can i use Veritas Volume Manager in HP-UX 11.11 without getting any licenses. I am planning to use VM for Hot Spare functionality.
Any ideas?

Re: HP-UX 11.11 Question
You can use it but not all the features will be enabled. (like online jfs and fsadm)

Re: HP-UX 11.11 Question
As far as I know, that would be licensed seperately to the Base product. Manpages on the vxdg command, among others, implies that split/joing functions require an extra license.
However, LVM MirrorUX is already on your server.....

Re: HP-UX 11.11 Question
The info I have is a little old but I think it's basically correct. The Base volume manager does not have mirroring, RAID-5, and DMP. You have to purchase the advanced product to get those. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by hot spare, but it sounds to me like you would want either Mirroring or Dynamic Multi Pathing!

Re: HP-UX 11.11 Question
I am looking for a feature which enables hot relocation of data from failing hard disk.
For example, when I have a Colume group with 5 hard disks and i want to make one more as a hot spare. So when one of 5 hard disks fails the data will be moved to the hot spare without any interruption. This option (Hot spare and Hot relocation) is available in VM and i am interested in that.
Does the Base Veritas Volume Manager supports Hot Spare?

Re: HP-UX 11.11 Question
Unfortunately, hotsparing and relocation is not part of the Base VxVM 3.5 that comes with 11.11. However, it does support rootability (and very robust at that) and the advatantage over LVM if used with SAN devices -- good bye to problems related to changing device names.
You won't need the other nice features like RAID5, online relocation/hotspare, online-reorg, DMP, etc... IF you will be using SAN disks that are already protected (ie. EVA Luns, HDS/XP luns, etc..) -- so why the need for hotsparing...? On your rootDG however(only on rootDG) you will have mirroring for free as well as probably hotsparing.
Striping is what is important with the base VxVM since most likely you will already have PATH protection via SecurePath or AutoPath or whatever PATH protection the SAN infra provides.. So there you go, if you have path protection to your SAN disks, and LUNs are already protected on the Array side -- you don't need the full VxVM license anymore...
