HP-UX 11.23 IA64 Mirror Split procedure

I'm wondering if anyone has a documented procedure for taking a pair of mirrored disks containing all of the HPUX OS logical volumes, splitting the mirror disk out, removing it from the server for safekeeping and then applying an HP-UX Upgrade to the single disk? After checking the results for a couple days, we would remirror onto the original second disk, or we would switch back to it in case of a need to revert.

Thanks!

Hi David:

There is a new product that accomodates your goal:

Shalom,

Same as the previous versions of the OS.

lvsplit will work.

lvextend -m 0

I think the better path toward system preservation is to make a make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery Ignite archive. Your method will work, but if the disk gets dropped or whatnot that doesn't provide protection.

With Ignite, a free product, you can send the tape off site for DR safekeeping.

Food for thought...

At my former company, we had an extra disk known as a broot disk. this was a dd copy of the vg00 environment, granted that it can only be on a single disk.

For DR use and for upgrades such as you are doing.

I recommend you to run hp's standard process to upgrade

for your system preservation run make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery Ignite archive.

With Ignite, a free product, you can send the tape off site for DR safekeeping.

run lvsplit command
lvsplit /dev/vg00/lvol1
fsck /dev/vg00/lovol1b
mount /dev/vg00/lvol1b /dev/vg00/lvol1

then rejoine with lvmerge
lvmerge /dev/vg00/lvol1b /dev/vg00/lvol1

lvextend -m 0

A co-worker emailed this to me.

Dynamic Root Disk (DRD) is an HP-UX system administration toolset used to clone an HP-UX system image to an inactive disk for software maintenance and recovery. DRD is available for download from a software depot.

More detail is here:
