Hi,
We have a power outage scheduled in a couple of days. I am not a UNIX admin but wish to shutdown the servers in a controlled fashion. Based on what I have read, I can use "shutdown -h -y 300" to do so. My questions is as follows:
1- Can I simply power off the RAID drives?
2- If not, what has to be done?
Thanks,

Solution
Case 1:
If you want to halt (not reboot) gracefully then issue shutdown -h -y 300 (5min) and then power off RAID drives.
Case 2:
If you want to only reboot then shutdown -ry 300 which will reboot in 5 min. don't power off RAID drives since you just want to reboot only server.

Re: HP-UX 11 - Graceful server shutdown
With a power outage, you want to issue the shutdown command you have listed. The main system will start its shutdown process after a 5 minute wait.
After the system is finished shutting down, physically power off the the RAID drives, the server itself and any other equipment attached to the server (if it is on a different power source)
When you power the system up:
turn on the periphial equipment
turn on the RAID drives drives (and let them spin up)
Turn on the system
Check all mount points, netwirking, etcetera

Re: HP-UX 11 - Graceful server shutdown
Digira,
Rule of gold, if you got devices connected to your server:
You turn on peripheral devices first before turning servers on, make sure they are up and ready to go before you start the Server.
When you turn your machine off, you turn the server off first and then when the shutdown is completed you turn off your peripheral devices.
Regards,
Jaime.
