HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

Hi all guys ...

I have a hp9000 B2000 Visualize workstation (with PA-RISC 8500 Arch) running hp-ux 10.20
we consider migrating to hp-ux 11i v.1 , but when installing it to this machine it stops responding at first steps.
as a manual instructions, I updated firmware to ver. 5 , but it doesn't run also. what is the problem ????
the product we purchased (P.N : B7993-10033 , december 2003 revised) include both 32 & 64 bit OS,
the only supported release is the 64 bit one. Can any one tell what is the problem ?
Is there any method to determine if this hp-ux product for servers only or for servers & workstaions ???

Any Ideas ??????

All answers will be highly appreciated

Re: HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

According to http://www.hp.com/workstations/risc/standard/operating/support_matrix/update.html the B2000 can be installed with 11.11 at 64 bit.

The B2000 has several system requirements (unsupported graphics card, firmware, etc.) http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5990-7279/00/00/18-con.html

One major reason of upgrade/installation failure is an invalid model name. If the model name is set incorrectly, or contains a white space, the upgrade will fail. A HP Hardware CE would have to run SS_CONFIG to reset the name.

Re: HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

Hi Tamer,

I'm not sure why your install is failing, but I can tell you that my workstation at HP is a B1000 and I'm running the 64-bit version of HP-UX 11i v1 on it.

Any version of HP-UX 11i or higher should work on both workstations and servers. That doesn't mean that every system is supported running HP-UX 11i, but what I mean is that HP-UX no longer comes in flavors only for workstations or servers the way 10.20 used to. In other words, I think the media you have should work for this system.

I confirmed that the B2000 is listed as a supported system in the "HP-UX 11i Version 1 Installation and Update Guide, June 2004" located at:

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5990-7279/5990-7279.html

Have you gone through this manual carefully to ensure you're following all pre-installation steps?

When you say it "stops responding at first steps", exactly which first steps are you referring to? Do you mean it stops responding during the install process? It stops responding during initial boot after the install? Where exactly does it stop and do you see any error messages at all?

Regards,

Dave

Re: HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

first , thanks for all of you ,,

Cheryl : the model name of the machine is :

# model
9000/785/B2000

and OS :

# uname -r
B.10.20

the machine have built in graphics
and I read the manual for system requirements (as firmware version) , & I think it meets it all.
nearly, I read all manuals related to this issue of installation requirements.
the machine stops when starting to boot from dvd drive , indicating ISL boot hpux ,, winstall ...

and stop responding (just before the screen prompting for keyboard layout) without displaying any error message

Still Neeeeeeeed help !!!!

Hi Tamer,

Check this link, maybe you need to upgrade your firmware before you upgrade your OS.

Re: HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

Hi Tamer,

IF you're getting no response *very* early in the install I'd suspect either:

1) Bad CD/DVD drive
or
2) Bad install media - try another CD

Hi Tamer,
Before installing OS please check all the SCSI hard disk is detecting or not. Please check the PIM information also.Try after replacing media and CD drive.

with respect to bad media / dvdrom drive , I tried another cdrom drive and many cds media. These were the first troubleshooting steps I did.

Re: HP-UX 11i v1 Installation ?

Hi Tamer,

Have you tried running the update-ux tool on the system before attempting the update/install? This tool might show you if your system is fully compatible with 11i or if there is something you need to adjust on the system before starting the update/install.

The update-ux tool is fully explained in the document I referenced in my earlier post:

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5990-7279/5990-7279.html

Please try running this tool and see if you get any errors or warnings.

Regards,

Dave
