What is is the difference? Is update 2 just an update or is it more?
What is the version number for HP-UX 11iv2 itanium update 2?
HP-UX 11iv2 = HP-UX11.23 correct?
Is there a list of HP-UX versions somewhere?

There is a link with the list, but its also in my carbon based memory banks.

HP-UX 11.31, (11iv3)latest version runs on PA-RISC and Itanium 2.
HP-UX 11.23 (11iv2)Runs on both platforms.
HP-UX 11.15/11.16 Itanium only.
HP-UX 11.11 (11iv1)PA-RISC only.

update 2 - is just that - an update - instead of calling it the "september 2004 release" they called it "update 2.

The meaning of update 2 in HP-UX 11i v2 depends on the platform.
For Itanium systems, it is just a patchset release, like they do every couple of months. It's just like the september 2006 release which contains patchings to the kernel to allow the Intanium dual-core processors.
For PA-RISC, this was the first release of HP-UX 11i v2 that was capable of running on PA-RISC. From this moment on, all code and patches for HP-UX 11i v2 contains a IA64 part and a PA-RISC part. Before update 2, there was only a IA64 part.
