I am a newbie in HP-UX world. I have got a rx2620 and rx4640 with HP-UX 11iv2.
With each server there is a CD pack. I installed HP-UX on both of them. During the installation it did not ask me about serial number or activation key. We bought HP-UX license for 4 CPUs on rx4640 and for 2 CPUs on rx2620 (totally 6 CPUs licenses).
I installed HP-UX step by step as its manual said. Did I make a mistake?
Why did not it ask me about serial number or something like that (as like as Microsoft windows. windows want you to enter serial number during the installation)
Please advice.
Hasan

Re: HP-UX 11iv2 Serial number or activation key
HP-UX works different than Windows on this point too.
You shouldn't insert any license on O.S. installation.
I would guess your 6 licenses are for iCOD software.
Check the following:
"Activating Your iCOD CPUs"

Re: HP-UX 11iv2 Serial number or activation key
There are 'codewords' required to unlock and load some specific applications. Examples, Glance, MirrorUX, OnLine JFS, etc.

There is no need to install licenses in HP-UX world. You haven't done any mistakes..

Re: HP-UX 11iv2 Serial number or activation key
So, What is the benefit of buying license per CPU? What kind of service will HP offer to the people who buy the licenses? do you mean we should pay to HP just for copy right? or they will offer some kind of service instead of it? Please advice.
Thank You,
Hasan

You can have one media kit for 100 servers, but still need to buy the licenses :)

Re: HP-UX 11iv2 Serial number or activation key
You buy the number of licenses for the number of CPUs in the box - that's it. Anything else is illegal. This aint't Linux! HP expect to make plenty of $$$ out of HP-UX.
Software support is purchased seperately, but is usually also costed per processor. I can't comment on whether you have this or not - you'd need to look at your original bill-of-materials and/or ask your reseller/HP.
Certainly for PA-RISC (rp) servers, HP just won't sell you it without at least the FOundation Operating ENvironment version of HP-UX, for Integrity (rx) servers you can also run Windows/Linux on them so you can potentially buy the server without the OS - but HP will still want to know what you intend to use the server for (as the server is configured slightly differently for the other OS's).

Re: HP-UX 11iv2 Serial number or activation key
As has been noted by the previous contributors, the CD's come with the machine when you purchase the hardware. The purchase price covers the cost of the hardware, the OS license and, typically, a year of hardware/os support. You can renew the support contract on a yearly basis.
For someone just starting with HP-UX, the support contract is golden. I guarantee the you will use it.

Mark
