HP-UX and Linux merge

Some of the forum members hear more about HP's strategy than we do down here in the colonies, so here's some questions:

1) Since HP is moving toward Itanium technology in a big way, with a view to phasing out the PA-RISC stream, how long before we can run a Linux Enterprise version on a Superdome using Itanium CPUs?
2) Is HP considering merging some of the nicer Linux commands and facilities into mainstream HP-UX, or are we going to see more HP-UX functions in Red Hat ES?

Any other insights would be great.

Re: HP-UX and Linux merge

Hi

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103_2-1021950.html

The loudest support comes from Itanium co-inventor Hewlett-Packard, which announced the new Integrity name for its Itanium server line on Monday, and which will begin selling its 64-Itanium Superdome in August. Lower-end eight- and 16-processor Integrity models are due later this year, and a Superdome upgrade with 128 Itanium processors is expected in January.

HP said it will deliver its first Itanium-based Superdome in the first half of 2003.

For point 2 it may happen but there is no sign of it yet in either direction.

Re: HP-UX and Linux merge

Hi

Yesterday i was browsing through HP's server site. I could see lot of new things since i last browsed(2 months back).

HP is not phasing out RISC machines(in fact i saw new superdome model of 124 processors, awesome!!!).

check in Integrity server.
they are giving more choice to customers.

1.Itanium based superdomes support both Linux as well HP-UX v2
2.Yes, any unix company gives advanced features to their unix

Re: HP-UX and Linux merge

Hi,

1) You can run Linux on Itanium Superdome now as HP had demo superdome with Windows, HP-UX and Linux in different partitions.

2) HP-UX will get more Linux and Tru64 features. Also other features will be merged into Linux as HP sees fit in position its Linux offering (e.g. MC/SG).

Re: HP-UX and Linux merge

Ravi,
HP will phase out PA-RISC (same with its Alpha chips) as it does NOT plan to develop further than PA-8900 (still in dev). This is as far as I am aware of, unless this has changed recently.

Hey Jov

Good reply: I thought the PA-RISC was to be discontinued.

Re: HP-UX and Linux merge

I _think_ that just at the moment, HP "supports" Linux on IPF systems with up to 8 CPUs. In terms of standalone boxes, that would mean up to the rx7620. What I cannot recall is if we also _support_ Linux on up to an 8 CPU Superdome NPAR.

Keeping in mind of course that "supports" implies works (or at least "is supposed to work :)") but "works" does not imply supported.
