HP-UX and processors

We currently have an old HP 9000 with HP-UX 10.20 and are in the middle of an upgrade. We have an HP box with Intel X86 but I don't know if we can run HP-UX on it (Google said that it has to be a RISK or Intel Itanium)

If there is no HP-UX for X86, is there a way to modify the system so that we can run it?

Re: HP-UX and processors

No. HP-UX will either work on PA-Risc or Itanium architecture. And 10.20 will only work on pa-risc.

Intel does make Itanium, but the architectures are not the same.

I don't know of any PC based arch. that will run HP-UX. It's all proprietary.

Re: HP-UX and processors

What you have found is correct. HP-UX can only run on PA-RISC processors (proprietary to HP) and Intel Itanium processors in HP hardware.

No, no way.

HP-UX does not run on generic x86 processors.

Re: HP-UX and processors

Thanks, Michael. I actually dont' want to run 10.20 and was looking to upgrade that also.

I didn't realize that Itanium came in more than one flavour. So are you saying that Intel Itanium is not the same as HP Itanium?

Re: HP-UX and processors

sorry. there isn't a way to run HPUX on an x86. I've always wished you could, either install it on x86, or run it out of vmware, but that isn't possible.

Re: HP-UX and processors

I believe Itanium CPUs are the same across the boards, but I think HP does something with HP-UX that will only allow it to run on HP's rx series of servers.

Ok, I think I have enough information for now. :)

Thank you everyone for your valuable input.

Re: HP-UX and processors

Lana,

Hp has published roadmaps for all their processor lines. As other have already said,
hp-ux is for PA-risc and itanium only. If you are an Encopmass memmber, you can go to their archives and get the HP Roadmap presentations from previous HP Technologuy Forums.

Knowing the past and what HP has said will help in your decisions...

BTW my site is running 11.00, 11.11, and 11.23..

Re: HP-UX and processors

Not that you need more info.

Itanium processors can run the following:
HPUX 11.23 or newer
VMS 8.x or newer
Windows 2xxx/XP/??
Red Hat and Suse Linux

x86 terminology in my mind is intel processors. They run:
Windows - many versions
Linux - many flavors
Solaris ?

Re: HP-UX and processors

At least, HP-UX is only "supported" by HP on HP 9000 (PA-RISC - it isn't spelled "RISK" :) and HP Integrity servers. Whether it would or would not "work" on another Itanium-based system is an open question and I'd suspect the answer is no.

There are other vendors (in Japan mostly) who also sell Itanium based systems - some of them may also be the same other vendors who run something that looks remarkably like HP-UX, but I've not researched it all that much to be certain.

In addition to Windows Server, HP-UX, "Linux," OpenVMS and NonStop, one can also run FreeBSD on an HP Integrity server with Intel Itanium processors (although it isn't "supported" by HP).

And, via the magic from the folks at Transitive, one can run other stuff on Itanium systems as well...
