HP-UX default passwords?

I've been auditing HP-UX recently and I was wondering if the root account came with a default vendor supplied password or if it was set at installation.

I've haven't been able to find a definite answer online.

Thanks

Re: HP-UX default passwords?

Out of the box, it's blank but almost all experienced admins do a cold install on a brand-new box to set it up "just right" and set the password upon installation.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

root password is set upon initial installation.
There is no default

"set_parms" runs initially and allows you to see a password, enter the IP, netmask, etc. If you have lost your root password you can boot up in single user mode and change it unless some one has set it to prevent that. Obviously, you need physical access to the system to do that.

If, after setting it per the suggestions above - one wants to prevent the potential for "getting in" by kicking the power cord
and adding an account in single-user mode on
reboot - there is a free of charge boot authenticator package available to
prevent such mischief.
