HP-UX hosting NIS for OS X

HP-UX hosting NIS for OS X

I have been attempting to use this type of setup, which for the most part has been working. However, it appears that the password aging field on our HP-UX server (,A.QP or something similar) confuses the OS X machine, which thinks that this is a continuation of the password hash, near as I can tell.

Does anyone more resourceful than I have any idea what I might do about this problem?

Re: HP-UX hosting NIS for OS X

I've noticed that if you use password aging, then password changes don't propogate back to the main NIS server. If you're using password aging, then password changes must be entered from the MAIN NIS server, and then they will propogate downward to the client machines normally. Sadly, it's not just to OSX, I've got this trouble when NIS server is HPUX and other machines are Linux, HPUX,etc.

Well, for me the problem is worse. Anyone with password aging cannot login because it does not understand their password. I have tested this and seen that those that do not have it (or an account that has had it removed) will work.

Ryan, methinks you're going to be a dead end here. I'd suggest looking at the possibility of NIS+ (something that's on my plate for this year). Maybe it's got something to offer here.

Re: HP-UX hosting NIS for OS X

Hi,

You are probably using password aging in a non-trusted environment,

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000072401010

The doc id is KBRC00014139.

And you are using NIS. However in a heterogeneous environment, this type of OS specific password aging might not be supported.

You need to look at other alternatives for password aging. You may still be able to use NIS for authentication. However it looks complicated to me from where i see this whole setup.

Hope this helps.
