This is the server support matrix for 11i

I am not sure you can do it on a PC..

Re: HP-UX installation on Intel

Nope, HPUX can run on PA-RISC or Itanium processors only.

Ok
How can I learn and practice on HP-UX without RX server? Is there any emulator or something?

Re: HP-UX installation on Intel

Sad news, you cant register now in testdrive as it says,

registration down

Registration is currently disabled while Test Drive moves to a new lab. We expect to have service restored on Monday November 7th, 2005. For more information, please see the announcement on our news page. If you have questions or comments, please send email to testdrive@hp.com and let us know.

Kristian,

Robert-Jan has provided the correct answer twice...seems like a "magic bunny" is in order...
(see this link: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/helptips.do?#33)

Older HP workstations (and servers) can be had for "cheap-to-free" depending upon who you ask. A lot of the stuff on eBay sells for less than the cost to ship it. Some of these old machines will actually run 11.11 in 32-bit mode (though it may not be supported), so they're a great way to learn.
Some information on older PA-risc machines and o/s support can be found here:

Re: HP-UX installation on Intel

If you work for a larger shop long enough, you'll probably end up with a D box in your home at some point.

There's a 712 workstation on eBay right now for about US$150.00, and a J5600 for about US$600.00. You probably spent more for your PC, right? :-)

Re: HP-UX installation on Intel

I think a 712 (pizza box) would be a good choice for learning the OS (10.20, 11.0 or 11.11). You can usually pick them up pretty cheap and they're light enough that shipping shouldn't cost more than what you pay for the system.

You can use the following emulator for HP-UX, we are using this for the last 15 years..

HP had some developer workshops where you can get an rx1620 for $2000 with the workshop. You should check with HP to see what they plan for the future.

Re: HP-UX installation on Intel

If your goal is to learn UNIX (which HP-UX is 90% is).. then why not get a Linux Distro instead? Nowadays you can run Linux on CD/DVD and even on a memory stick!

Most of the tools that are in use on the commercial UNICES are now available on Linux anyway.. Things like filesystems (jfs, VxFS, etc.) and Volume managers (LVM,VxVM) and enterprise Databases (Oracle, Sybase, etc..) are now prevalent on Linux and ARE MANAGED EXACTLY as their UNIX counterparts.
