HP-UX jet direct printer problem

My laserJet 8000 printer do not answer when i try to create printer configuration in BOOTP/TFTP database.

When i try using Telnet Configure Jet direct option: Set IP Address Locally, i get an error message with:

The IP address 10.5.1.5 is already in use by another node

I setup the printer spool following jet direct instruction (setup remote printer) and perform a print test.

With the command

lp - d ljet8 testfile

i get on the printer:

User: Root
Host: daniel
Class:
Job: HP_POS_BW-1

a the place of the normal contains of the text file.

If a print from netscape, the text is good.

Where is my problem?

Turn the printer off

ping 10.5.1.5

If there is a response, some other piece of equipment has the same IP address as the printer

Daniel,

Agree with DCE, most likely a duplicate IP address.

Jaime.
Work hard when the need comes out.

Re: HP-UX jet direct printer problem

I make the test to turn off the printer
and try to ping, without success (the printer is alone on 10.5.1.5).

The printer work, i just unable to print any text file (i just print header).

How i could fix the problem

Re: HP-UX jet direct printer problem

Well, you'll need to delete the printer because it has not been setup as a JetDirect printer. Instead, you set it up as a printer server like a PC print server which creates all sorts of problems. So delete the printer with lpshut, lpadmin -xljet8 and then lpsched.

Now verify that your printer is reachable:

cd /opt/hpnpl/bin
./hpnpadmin -v 12.34.56.78

where 12.34.56.78 is the printer's IP address. The output from hpnpadmin should show that the printer is a "network" printer and available along with a bunch of statistics.

Now print a simple test file with:

./hpnpf -x 12.34.56.78 -N /etc/profile

That should print a copy of the system's profile. If all that works, use this command to add the printer to the spooler:

./addqueue -q ljet8 -h 12.34.56.78

and then test the printer with:

lp -dljet8 /etc/profile

which should print the file as before. The printer is now configured correctly. Note that a "remote" printer is not a real printer but a print server like Windows. The JetDirect LAN card happens to support that protocol but it is extremely limited (no useful options) whereas adding the printer with addqueue will give access to all the options in the man page: man net_ljx000
