HP-UX Kernel and more thah 4 processors

In a recent class "Systems and Network Troubleshooting", an instructor mentioned that because HP-UX ran with only on kernel, you should never use more than 4 processors. She said that the one kernel couldn't handle the load of switching between mor than 4 processors. If that is so, how can we use more than 4 processors? Is there some special setup?

I had to leave the class after only one day, so I didn't get a chance to follow up.

I suggest that you do not use that instructor again as she is completly incorrect and if she is wrong on such basic things I dread to think what she is saying about other aspects on unix.

Unix will handle multiple processors in fact the new superdome is built to take up to 64.

I run several machines with 6 and 8 processors without any special config.

It is a good thing that you left the class after a day. That information that she passed to you guys in the class is absolutely wrong. Even WINNT has multi-processor capability.

I've had a couple 'interesting' instructors....the one who basically said that the world was going to come to a grinding halt come 1/1/00. I'm sure now he's saying it will happen 1/1/01.

But considering the fact that I have 6 processors on one box (and 4 on others) I can truly speak from experience....'dah...it works just fine....that's why they give ya expansion slots...'

There will NOT be a degrade in performance. In fact HP even sells an 8 Processor S-Class.

In fact, I would suggest that a strongly worded letter to the educational provider might be in order. Who knows haw many other people will be subject to such ignorance if the instructor is not "corrected".

May I suggest you take this back to the Education Centre you attended and raise the point. It is not a good feeling to come away from a course and discovering that there is a gross error such as this.
Oh yes, Superdome should be able to go to more than 64 processors.
