HP-UX Licence

Is HP-UX licence mandatory or legal , for instance , What happend , If I had perchaced 4 core licence HP-UX and install OS in 8 core server ?
Use licences are legally or the OS is not working if there is not enough licence .
If I order a HP 9000 rp server in one core and after that we need to enable secound core , do we need any activation file or not ? on the other hand same as above its mandatory (for upgrade frameware)or legally ?

Re: HP-UX Licence

Hi Fred,

Have a look at the following link to me it implies the OS is free.

http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B9088AC

Anyway the OS data is not locked behind a codeword like other HP software on their media.

Re: HP-UX Licence

Shalom,

The base OS is licensed per system, not CPU. Add in features like mirror/ux and OnlineJFS are licensed per CPU.

What you need with every server is LTU, License to use, which you must get with the hardware.

There is no enforcement mechanism built into the hardware or firmware.

The LTU is supposed to be transferred with the system.

Re: HP-UX Licence

As mentioned, licenses based on processor count are not applicable to the OS but are very common for optional products, both HP and non-HP. All major database vendors (Oracle, Sybase, Informix, etc) license their products based on the processor count and in most cases, the software will not run if it is installed in a system (or partition) with more processors than the product license allows.
