HP-UX major release list

Is there an official document somewhere that lists which of the HP-UX releases are the major ones. The documents I've found have not differentiated them. I believe it boils down to 9.04 (9.X) / 10.20 (10.X) / 11.00 (11.X) / 11i v1 / 11i v2. However, with the 11i naming scheme this is no longer clear-cut. The company I am with wants to make sure we're only installing the "major" releases.

That's one of the pages I looked at, however, it lists them all without designating which ones are major and which ones are minor.

I would consider all of those as major releases.

Any new numbered release from HP I would consider as major.

I consider the twice yearly patch bundles the minor releases.

11i v1 11.11 PA-RISC
11i v2 11.23 PA-RISC/Itanium

Itanium only:
11i v 1.5
11i v 1.6 11.22

They are all major. As your application vendors support it, I would beginning September of this year get started on planning the move to 11i v2 11.23 on all systems.

My theory is that you let it be on the market a year before you install it.

There are no official documents that list which HP-UX releases are major or not. I think it is a question of naming. Major releases used to be the first in the series of 9.x, 10.x, 11.0, but then they changed the naming convention to be 11iv, with being 1, 2, 3, ... for the major releases.
I do not think 11iv1.5 or 11iv1.6 were intended to be major releases, only 11iv1, 11iv2 were. And the next major release will be 11iv3.

Your company needs to define what "major"
and "minor" mean, because HP doesn't.
Furthermore, each OS vendor has its own
distinct versioning conventions.

Back in the day you could perhaps argue that
in HPUX "X.Y" the major version was "X",
but since the marketroids have taken over
this is no longer the case.
