Anyone?

HPUX:
- Migration path to Itanic err Itanium?
- TruCluster and AdvFS / LVM --- when? safe?
- Stick to VxVM

PARISC:
- Any more delays for the MAKO (PA 8800)
- Is it officially dead?
- What's the path to Itanium like?

Re: HP-UX or PARISC Questions

These are questions you should ask your local HP sales rep.

I haven't specifically asked, but I am sure I will hear about it during HP World in a couple of weeks...

Re: HP-UX or PARISC Questions

PA-RISC

Proven, scalable.

Itanium - did not do well in the market the first cut. Now we have Itanium 2. There is a risk of buying orphan technology.

LVM has been ported to Unix, Its not going anywhere. A year ago HP was saying that VxVM was where everyone was going to have to go.

They are not saying that now.

AdvFS was acquired in the Compaq.

This gives HP the opportunity to stop paying license fees to Veritas for filesystems. They can even build more features like Mirror/UX into the base product.

Will they? Can't answer that.

ServiceGuard/TruCluster.

I get the unofficial impression that if TruCluster is a better product it will be ported to HP-UX and be the standard.

I hesitate to go out and learn Service Guard for this reason. But get this, HP ported Service Guard to Linux, so who knows where that one is going.

HP is a big company. They have not clearly communicated to customers what the future of these products are. The relationship with Veritas is close and complex.

Re: HP-UX or PARISC Questions

Hi Nelson,

To answer your questions:

There is no "upgrade" path to Itanium releases. Obviously one of HP's prime goals with all new releases is to provide binary compatibility with previous releases, hence most programs will work with no tweaking. One the release notes for 11.23 (next enterprise release) are available all this will become clear.
AdvFS is scheduled for release late 2004. Safe - HP wouldn't release it if it wasn't. Bear in mind they can't think of every eventuality, some of the current issues with this FS type may still be in there, but these guys are the best in the industry.
Stick to VxvM? Don't know what you need so can't advise.

As far as I'm aware PA-8800 is on release. PA-8900 is certainly in development. Just be aware you won't get any major architecture enhancements in this, hence why HP developed Itanium.
As above, no, not as far as I know.
Point one addresses some of these issues. I've read the reasons for Itanium and the internal architecture, it makes quite compelling reasons for the upgrade. If you are buying new I would recommend Itanium now - it is built from the same source see as 11i. (I can see some responses to this point :-))

Cheeers,

James.
