HP-UX OS Reinstall without disturbin the data in the root disk

Hello,

Is it possible to reinstall the HP-UX os without formatting the disk. i.e in Windows there is an option "Leave file system intact" which will reinstall the os and keeps the data intact. In linux also it is possible.
Can you please let me know is there any option in hp-ux too.

Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Raghu.

Re: HP-UX OS Reinstall without disturbin the data in the root disk

Hi Raghu,

There is nothing like reinstalling the OS from a fresh CD to fix the corrupted files like you do it on Windows.

You will have to know what files have been corrupted and either you have to restore them from backups or patch them.

So, it is a good idea to regularly take 'make_tape_recovery' tapes. (Say once in a week or whenever you make a configuration change to the OS). If you run into issues, you can restore the OS back to the last known working state from the make_tape_recovery tape.

Look at the following URL for more information on ignite

As long as you seperate the data filesystems from root volume group, recoveries like this can be easy and transparent.

Are you talking about OS data or application data?

If OS data, your best option is to use fbackup. You can then recover files with frecover, which does not overwrite existing files.

If application, it depends on whether the data is on the same disc as the OS. If on a different disc, re-installing the OS will not affect it. But you will have to make the OS aware of the second disc.
