HP-UX Print Management software

Hi,

Just a general question. Are there alternatives out there these days to the LP Print Spooler that HP-UX utilizes. I have a client asking for one that does not stop and start the spooler every time a printer is added and I tried googling for such a thing but have come up empty handed.

Any inputs will be appreciated...

Thanks,
Steve.

Re: HP-UX Print Management software

Any time you add a new printer, yeah it restarts it.
Best thing to do is add printers during quiet or scheduled times so you can control to impact of any interuption.

Adding printer is not an everyday task generally. Here, we only have the big production Xerox printers and select smaller printers limited on the floor that print from HPUX. There may be a ton of printers out there, but only select ones print from HPUX. Those, once set up, rarely change.

You might see if the client might consider looking at "organizationally" how they print. Regionalize what prints to where. We found we saved in costs instead of alot of unnecessary printers.

But if your talking Print Spool Management software, their are plenty of products that play nice and control the print jobs out there to choose from.

I see that cups has been ported to HPUX:

I use cups on Linux boxes, and it is great - however, I don't know if it restarts whenever a printer is added or deleted. Perhaps a posting in the Linux forums might get you an answer to that question.
