HP UX release 12 ?

Hi everybody,

Does anybody know something about a release 12 of HP-UX ?
Is HP-UX still on the run against Linux?

Re: HP UX release 12 ?

HP-UX Releases(my understanding)

11.00 Obsolete

11iv1 PA-RISC Only 11.11
11iv1.5 Itanium Only 11.20
11iv1.6 Itanium Only 11.22
11iv2.0 Itanium Only 11.23

11iv3.0 PA-RISC and Itanium, unified release

The last item is not released at this time.

As far as I am aware this is the only pending version of HP-UX.

HP may choose to dub this HP-UX 12, but at this time that marketing decision has not reached my ears. 11iv3.0 is next.

AS far as "running with Linux" goes, that is a subjective statement. HP-UX does a lot of things a heck of a lot better than Linux already.

Re: HP UX release 12 ?

Correct interpretation of my language.

Mrs. Protter doesn't like it when i swear.

The qualify my assertion in the sentence using heck.

I have five years plus of experiences as a HP-UX Sysadmin and five years before that as a DBA and primary backup.

I have about two years of production experience using Linux. I use primarily Linux to run a web hosting business.

From that Experience, I can say with some confidence that HP-UX is a industrial strength, solid operating system. Its very reliable. It is not as secure out of the box as Linux is, but it is very secureable. Its SAM tool for systems administration is the best SA assistant I've every used, though I rarely use it any more.

HP's distribution of Apache is more secureable and I find their approach to logical volume management with lvm to be better than the standard tools that come with Linux, though now there is a reverse engineered LVM port for Linux, which I've not had to use yet.

All and all, HP-UX in my opinion, and its just that is better. Why might you ask did I use Linux for my business? Because of cost and hardware concerns.

My Linux servers are running Intel 32 Bit processors. Though production is a Dell Poweredge Server class box, the backup and development boxes are actually used desktop machines that were taken out of service becasue Windows ran too slow on them.

Linux's advantaqe in cost made it my only viable choice for my business which was financed with a few thousand dollars borrowed from credit cards.

In an ideal world, with adequate finances I would have used HP-UX and HP-9000 servers for the business, for the reasons defined above.

Re: HP UX release 12 ?

I completely agree with you on the cost adventage of Linux Steven but I also believe that Linux have also other advantages:
- best tools
- fast !
We have developped a real-time transaction application for switching messages and the performance level on HP-UX 11.00/PA-RISC 8600 is very poor!
Our application run slowly on HP while it speeds up to a *5 factor on a Linux/iNtel PIII 2,4 Ghz.
It appears that we never could optmize the code compiling with aCC and benefit from the 3 phases compiling for optimizing on PA-RISC.

It appears that for real-time multi-threads applications, the only factor that increases the throughput of the system is the CPU clock frequency

Re: HP UX release 12 ?

My understanding is that there is nothing emminent as far as a change to a "version 12" versus 11.something.

Part of this is related to 3rd party vendors and certifications issues as well as branding (the reason 11i keeps popping up is that HP has been pushing 11i (i.e. 11 internet) to establish as a brand that HP-UX 11.whatever is good for your internet ;-) )

If you are asking the question of whether or not HP is planning a long term future for HP-UX then the answer is Yes they are.
