Check the permissions on the file and if it exists. What user are you running sar as?

"sar extracts data from a previously recorded file, either the one specified by -f option or, by default, the standard system activity daily data file /var/adm/sa/sadd for the current day dd."

/var/adm/sa directory and /var/adm/sa/sa01 file does not exist
I run sar as root
I create directory /var/adm/sa , file /var/adm/sa/sa01
sar -q
sar not display Can't open /var/adm/sa/sa01 but dislay nothing

sar -q 1
You can also tell sar to repeat several times:
sar -q 1 5
Without any numbers trailing the options, sar will try to use files.
