HP-UX Syslogd
I am trying to get syslogd to output the usual messages to /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for all the different services on HP-UX 11.00. I have done this by setting this line is /etc/syslog.conf:
*.emerg;*.alert;*.crit;*.err;*.warning;*.notice;*.info/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
I am finding certain services aren't outputting anything to this file such as telnetd and a few more.
I am wondering what it is that I have to do to allow all services logging info to go to this file. I know that ftpd can be done by running it with the -l flag but what about all the others ?
Thanks for your help

Re: HP-UX Syslogd
Hi,
Basically you need to run the 'inetd' daemon with the -l option. Have a look at this posting. James and Clay give some really good advice.

Re: HP-UX Syslogd
Hi Tony,
Enabling all facilities doesn't necessarily log all the messages into syslog. The corresponding service should log the messages. Some of them only do after enabling the options like ftpd with -l or -v.

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try

Re: HP-UX Syslogd
Thanks for the tips. I should have also mentioned that I had already tried running /usr/sbin/inetd -l, however, the format of the log message isn't as descriptive as I'd like, also, I would like to be able to cater for daemons that aren't running under inetd. For example, when the ftpd is run with -l, it outputs a very descriptive message, however ftpd run under inetd with with -l flag is not so descriptive. I'd imagine that it would be up to the application itself to output logs, is there some config. file for telnetd and other daemons ?
