HP-UX work? HP-UX as a web host platform.
What are good approaches, web or otherwise to enhancing my income by doing some HP-UX admin work as a part time, after hours consultant?
Anyone using HP-UX as a web host server, for mail and all services generally provided by an ISP/NSP
I will soon own a D320 server and would like to make it my backup web server to a Dell Poweredge running linux, unless of course the D box outperforms the Dell box, in which case it could be production.
Thanks.
It's new years, 7 points for any response, 10 for actual experience in either query.

Re: HP-UX work? HP-UX as a web host platform.
I am experienced as a web host but not as an ISP/NSP vendor.
11i is very useful in terms of internet applications. It does provide apache, tomcat etc.,. by default. Apache is very easily configurable. You will need to procure disk space and customize Apache to allow users to have their own URLs.
With Apache and sendmail running, you can even use it as a mail server. But you will need to develop/purchase mail-interfaces for the users.
I cannot name but I worked as an administrator in a company that used HP servers for e-commerce stuff.

Re: HP-UX work? HP-UX as a web host platform.
I paid for a couple of vacations that way.
Now for the web question -- The D box should make a pretty good web server. I'd run Apache and Perl on it. If you have played with Apache on Linux you shouldn't have too much trouble on the D box. Just be aware that the D boxes are getting to be a bit old and parts may be hard to find if you have problems. I would be very interested to see how the D-box compares with the Dell PC running Linux.

In my opinion no one has a better system recovery tool than Ingite UX, and with disk mirroring you will have a very reliable system.
Good luck,
John

Network (in the social sense) with folks. If your skill set is good, consulting opportunities abound.

We use HP-UX for all aspects of what would be considered ISP/NSP work (web servers, mail servers, DNS servers, authentication servers, database servers, FTP servers, POP servers, application servers, cache servers, e-commerce servers).

Isn't AOL an HP shop now?
It looks like www.telewest.co.uk is an HP-ux shop.
We use a combination of hp-ux and solaris servers, but absolutely no client facing M$ products!!!

Use Apache for your webserver software.
I have never looked for part-time work, as I am busy enough with my primary job.

Re: HP-UX work? HP-UX as a web host platform.
I have extensive Apache experience on HP-UX and Linux.
qpopper seems a universally used too.
I will have fun with the D box when I get it and due to parts issues probably use it as a secondary to the Dell Linux box.
I will contact aol concerning consulting work, and was wondering what sites were available to post my availability for HP-UX or Linux work?
I registered at rentageek, but have had no inquiries.
