i have a problem with my R-class server with hp-ux 10.20 having mirrored root disk. one mirrored disk is failed and not yet replaced. once i could boot the system with mirrored disk without quorum.when i boot in the next day system is not even booting with the mirrored disk and getting error message continusly
"error writing VGDA[4] TO disk H/W path 8/16/5.1.0 (error=5)"

here H/W path is for alternate boot path (mirrored) as already pri boot ndisk is failed.
please give me any solution so that i can up my sytem atleast replace faied mirror diskl.

Re: hp-ux

Try booting in lvm maintenance mode and restore the vgconfiguration of vg00 to this alternate disk then reboot the server.
Pls don't try to come to multiusermode from lvm maintenance mode as it may result in some unrecoverable issues.

Re: hp-ux

could be one of several things:

1. disk at 8/16/5.1.0 has failed as well.
2. cabling problem (loose , bad/no terminator)
3. controller problem.

You didn't say, so were both disks on same controller?

You may end up needing to replace both drives. If this is the case, do you have a good Ignite tape to restore from?

Re: hp-ux

hai

thanks for the valuable reply

worst part in this problem is that i dont have ignite restore.
both the disks are on the same controller. but the thing is both disks are getting detected if search...and i could here the noice badly from the first disk and system hangs if try to boot from yhe first disk.so what i am trying to say that there is no chance of controller probem.it might be the even secon disk problem. but before it too failed how can i make my my system up atleast once so that i can replace the first disk to mirror.

thanks

Re: hp-ux

Have u tried booting in lvm maintenance mode, if vgda information is got corrupted or that drea gone bad then this is the only way to boot once then try earlier suggested vgcfgrestore on secondary disk for vg00.
r u able to boot the system in single user mode or lvm maintenance mode.
