HP UX10.20 Printer Drivers

I have installed a new DJ 3820 via a JetDirect Box.

But now i want to set the printer up within the HP9000. My Question is what printer do i select within the HP Spooler, when i am adding a remote printer?

Re: HP UX10.20 Printer Drivers

Well,
Will it be a remote printer, then its just the case of saying its BSD, the hostname (IPadress) and the remote queue name you give it, otherwise you would have to look for the jetadmin software somewhere if it isnt installed, here Icanoot help not knowing what type (seems new) of dj you are using, beware of end of 10.20 support...

All the best

Re: HP UX10.20 Printer Drivers

Hi,
Use SAM for addding the printers, select "Printes and Plotters" then "Printer Spooler" then "Printers and Plotters". From "Action" menu select "Network-based Printers and Plotters". I don't think there is any model scripts specific for your model, you have to use some of the default deskjet models (in most cases they are backwards compatible).

Re: HP UX10.20 Printer Drivers

Hi Mark,

you can use remote printer only if you have installed the printer once as a network-based at one workstation. So follow Leif's instructions. I had no problems to choose an older printer typ for a newer one. You need the MAC address of your JetDirect Box.

Good luck

Re: HP UX10.20 Printer Drivers

HP-UX does not have drivers like Windows. Instead, there aqre simple printer scripts that mostly perform simple tasks for ASCII files. So specify "deskjet" as the model script for this printer. If you look in /usr/lib/lp/model, you'll see that all the DeskJet scripts are the same:

ll -i /usr/lib/lp/model/desk*

This is shown by the inode number (hard-linked filenames will have the same inode number). Now it is very important to understand the wide variety of connection methods for printers:

1. Direct-connect (local printer in SAM): either serial or parallel (parallel in the case of the 3820). Use SAM to specify the device file for the parallel port and add the printer with the deskjet model script.

2. JetDirect adapter (network-based printer in SAM). The 3820 does not have a network connection but the printer cable may be plugged into an HP JetDirect External adapter. You'll need to configure the JetDirect External box with an IP address, subnet nask and router/gateway address. Then you can add the 3820 as a network printer using SAM.

3. Remote printer (in SAM) means that the printer is not connected to the HP-UX computer but to some other computer and the print requests are sent from HP-UX to the remote system for printing. In this case, no model script can be specified as the remote system will provide interface support. This is the least desirable connection method due to network issues and SysV remote spooling limitations.

Since you have the JetDirect interface, you can add the printer with a single command rather than SAM, assuming the JetDirect box has been already configured:

/opt/hpnpl/bin/addqueue -h IP-address -q printer-name

You may need to specify the -L option to point to the net_lj4x model script (use -L 7).
