HP Virtual Machines - Itanium

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I didn't find any good threads on it.

Just a general feeler question about running HP Virtual machines on Itanium? Are many folks doing this? Is anyone brave enough to run a production system inside a VM?

We are budgeting right now for 2007 server upgrades. Typically we will replace our production server, and then the current prod box becomes the dev server. If we migrate from RISC (rp5470) to Itanium however, I think we'd better replace both machines. Otherwise I have no place to test OS patches or Oracle patches since the binaries are different.

I'm trying to decide whether to get a beefier box and run 3-4 VMs on it, or whether we really need 2 physically separate boxes.

Points for sharing your thoughts or better yet your experiences with HP VM.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: HP Virtual Machines - Itanium

Tim,

No experience with VM, but we do the same thing with VPars: Production on one VPar, development on the other, all in the same box. I kind of miss having separate boxes, but I certainly have no complaints about the current setup.

Yes, there are people running production servers on HP Integrity Virtual machine, but it is not recommended to run a server that would be heavy on things like disc I/O

You may find it of interest to read som eof the documentation on VM, at http://docs.hp.com/en/hplex.html#HP%20Integrity%20Virtual%20Machines, and particularly this one:
