HP World 2003 Call for papers

I got an email this morning on a call for papers for HP World this year. (In Hot-lanta) They want the submissions by the end of January.

Is anyone going to submit a paper? Should I do a paper, and if so, what topic should I do it on? (I always hating having to do essays or talks where I had to pick the topic.

Last year I presented at the customer patch panel. It was fun.

You could do a poll program about what West-European country HP-World would be held next year, but I guess that since it is in the US, all votes would go to US, a neverending cycle.

I could do how we patch....

Any other ideas? The Deadline is Jan 31st. My boss figures that presenting is good for the soul. I figure he just wants to go and heckle me again.

John,

I think we know how you patch:

Sorry I missed you at the patch panel last year, I would have loved to help your boss heckle you. Maybe this year.

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

I like security and shell techniques myself. Security can be a big hassle, so perhaps some interactive shell techniques, and basic scripting in a not so common shell. I.E. C-shell.

NOTE: I wrote C-shell programs to ping all IP's in a range and build reports to show if servers were up or down, do system accounting for me, archiving (as C-shell is very fast at handeling numbers), and even a script which launches remote shells to an IP range killing all user processes for a given user. (that was a fun one).

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

how about MC Service Guard - high availability clustering? I've been spending a lot of time doing that lately. or... my own pet project at work... ServiceControl Manager (SCM). What a great product. Judging from the ammount, or should I say lack of topics related to it on the forum, I'd say not many people know about it. That's what I'd do.

I like the idea of SCM. Doesn't seem to be a lot of knowledge of it out there, and would certainly be interested in finding out more about it.

Bouncing it back to the top.

Only 2 weeks left to submit. I have no topics yet I am really burning to present. (I think I have just been tired.)

Pete, are you going this year. If so, do you want to do a team presentation?

John,

Yes, I posted after you and yes, there is a time problem again. It's been noted in the Issues thread but the time stamps on the reports prevented it from getting to the top.

John,

(1) How about how to successfully install/compile gnu stuff?

(2) How to install modules into apache and/or perl?

(3) practical system resource monitoring and capacity planning?

(4) Common sense security: ie: keep users out of shell's, expire passwords, make user id's match some form of their employee numbers (allows HR [human resources] to disable terminated employee's accounts without a lot of coding - plus you can keep a Database on what users have access to what), institute LDAP logins, ...

(5) How to effectively use the HP forums and the benefits to your company and to your employees!

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

Yeah, I was thinking this morning about doing something relating to the forums, but I would problibly do something about the whole ITRC, and make sure a good emphasis gets put on the forums. That way there would be enough content for a session, and we can show people they need to be here...

Pete, Did you post after me? If so, maybe there is a time problem again here...

Harry, I was going to ping the chat thread to enable me to possibly explain some GNU and/or perl issues, but the chat area is down. I won't attend the conference, but a (tech) chat might help some of you. I'm all open to suggestions.

John

Can you tell me what the cutoff date was? I am trying to complete one that I am writing on Clustering Differences between using MC/Serviceguard vs. Veritas Cluster Server.

Thank you.

You don't need to have the presentation done, I think, just the abstract.

Hi,

Remember that Jan. 31st is just the date for submitting your proposal. The actual paper isn't due for a long time.

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

What about "Server Security at BYU - a case study"

We can show where we were, and what we have done to fix where we were. We would also talk about why what we do works/does not work for us.

We could also talk about some of the other products out there to do the same things we are doing, only cheaper...

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

I was wondering if I should do something on real life with Oracle.

I could get an outline done by Month end, but not the whole thing.

Anyone at HP think I should do it?

Re: HP World 2003 Call for papers

Stephen,

You should definitely do it. You have to remember that it is not just us techies at HP World, management goes, and often there are newbies there also. A presentation on Oracle in the real world may be very helpful to people there who are headed that direction, but have not gotten there yet. (Plus we can come and heckle you... Just Kidding.)

Hope it helps
