HP9000 ping problem

If I ping from the server an host in my lan i have 4 packets that return in few msec (1 or 2) and 1 that return in 300msec, and so on, 4 packets FAST and 1 packet slow. If I try to ping the same host wwith another server connected on the same switch of the HP9000 the ping has no problems so i think that ther's something wrong on HP9000....can you help me?

Re: HP9000 ping problem

check

1.check the speed, duplex settings on the hpux box and at the other end,the switch.

Both speed and duplex should match.

Just do a
#lanadmin
>lan
>display

check for any collisions/errors

2.Just do a
#netstat -nr

check the routing table on the hpux machine.Probably it is taking a longer route.

3.Try replacing the network cable.

Re: HP9000 ping problem

For the first time ARP broadcast is done to build the ARP cache. Once MAC address is known, no further broadcast is needed. That is why faster response.

Check with #arp -a command as well.

Re: HP9000 ping problem

Please check routing table in your HP9000 server using netstat -nr , please check for is there any more than one path exist to reach to the other remote server to whom you are trying to ping.

Re: HP9000 ping problem

lancard speed could be mismatched. Do lanscan to see lancards
#lanscan
To check speed do
#lanadmin -x 1 (where 1 is lan1)
Check speed from switch/port side.

Re: HP9000 ping problem

Interesting.

I had similar symptoms once.

Do and unlimited length ping, say HP-Ux box to HP-UX box. If the times gradually rise, the NIC card on the target box needs to be replaced.
