1.check the speed,duplex settings on the hpux box and at the other end,the switch.
Both speed and duplex should match.
Just do a
#lanadmin
>lan
>display
check for any collisions/errors
2.Just do a
#netstat -nr
check the routing table on the hpux machine.Probably it is taking a longer route.
3.Try replacing the network cable.

Check with #arp -a command as well.

To check speed do
#lanadmin -x 1 (where 1 is lan1)
Check speed from switch/port side.

I had similar symptoms once.
Do and unlimited length ping, say HP-Ux box to HP-UX box. If the times gradually rise, the NIC card on the target box needs to be replaced.
