Hi,
I'm trying to configure a printer using the HPPI interface. I have several printers that are working fine, but occasionally I get a printer that HPPI says it cannot ping.
I can ping the IP address from the my server. But when trying to create the printer, HPPI says it cannot ping. It then says I can add it but there may be problems. I am, in fact, able to add it, but the print jos just "hang out" in the queue forever. The printer I'm trying to add is an HP printer. We're running 11i.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Solution
You symptoms are indicative of 1) bad network - cables, routers, switches 2) bad hostname resolution or 3) bad printer setup - either from the printer front panel or a bootp entry.
Check the printer IP setup especially, IP address and subnet mask.
Next the shell, ping printer_ip_address; it that works, ping printer_hostname
If you can't ping by ip_address, then you definitely have network/printerconfiguration errors. If you can ping by ip address but not by hostname then check DNS, NIS, and/or /etc/hosts.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: HPPI can't ping printer...need some help here
Hi Steve,
Make sure the IP address that you are specifying does correspond to the printer. You can do a telnet to the printer to verify. Also make sure there are no IP Address conflicts.

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try
